I took with me the last five Silver Helms and managed to get them finished just in time for the Middlehammer Forum's Tale of X Gamers deadline:
In the first month I painted:

High Elf Lord on Barded Elven Steed

High Elf Battle Standard Bearer

9 Silver Helms with Full Command

I'm pretty pleased with that. Next up will be 14 High Elf Archers with Full Command, and a Mage.

On another note, while I was on holiday we visited Porlock Weir, and I found some pillboxes:

There was this slightly sunken one, which had been covered in stones taken from the beach as, I think, a form of camouflage. It appeared to be an M.G. bunker but as I couldn't see the front embrasure I'm not sure.
And this more intact one that appeared to have been turned into a storage shed at some point, but it's definitely seen better days - the stove's chimney is broken, the door smashed down.

Exmoor was beautiful. The sea, as always, a wonderful thing to watch.

In between painting High Elves (those Silver Helms are such a pain in the bum!), I have been helping out my old pater, Al Front, with some of his backlog:

15mm DBA Saxons to fight the Romano-British.

I've really enjoyed painting these little fellows; they're so simple - flat colours, Agrax Earthshade, shields, matt varnish, base, done. I am trying to paint the shields so that everyone has a different design. I don't know how that will end up but it's jolly fun. So far I have finished three stands of 'Warband', one stand of 'Skirmishers' and have eight stands of 'Spearmen' to go.

As well as that, on Tuesday I went to my friend J's flat along with J2, K, Dr D, and A to play some more Starfinder.

However they are pretty essential to most fantasy armies, which is why my High Elf Army of Tor Sethain has 9 Silver Helms in it (the full unit is brought up to 10 by the inclusion of a High Elf Prince).

Today I finished the front rank with the musician and a basic Silver Helm:

Just another five to go and that's the cavalry element done and I can start on a unit of infantry (probably one of the blocks of archers).

As a side note, I am not impressed with GW's 'Corax White' paint, which isn't really white - it's like a very very pale grey, which you can clearly see on the shield designs. Sadly it is my only white at the moment so I'm going to use it throughout this army for continuity's sake.
Here is a short and picture-heavy account of Mission 1, Scenarios 1 and 2:

Rangers and Companions:

Daedalus and Nyx the Recruit - J
Petal and Iorek the bloodhound - me
Vicar and Ingvar the Recruit (scribe) - P
Lorcan and Big Mac the Recruit (I think) - K

Mission 1, Scenario 1: The Deserted Village

The rangers and their companions enter the village looking for their missing fellow Ranger, Aventine, only to be surrounded by shambling corpses!

Overall jolly fun game. We burned through the two scenarios pretty quick, starting at around 7ish and finishing about 9:30pm. There were a couple of dicey moments but by and large the four rangers and their companions were on top of things throughout, which led us to have a quick discussion about there not being enough enemies. However we agreed to try out the next Mission with no tweaks to the number of enemies as if the dice had come up a bit different we could all have been killed quite quickly indeed.

I didn't really know what to do with them at first, so they sort of languished a bit.

Then I decided to make them a vampire and necromancer and paint them up for Mordheim! So I did.

Then I built some zombies for them, and undercoated the zombies. By now it was ... definitely about 2005.

Nothing happened for another 12 years or so.

I had ideas! Oh, I had ideas. Then in about 2017, give or take a year or so, I got hold of two of the three models I wanted to use for Dregs (characters in the warband) - the Middenheimer Youngblood girl and boy that GW made in 1999 for the initial release of Mordheim.

Then nothing happened.

Until a couple of months ago, when some friends started talking about
wanting to do a fantasy skirmish game, and all the Mordheim MMXIX stuff
floating around on the internet combined to drive me on to finish the warband!

And
last night, I finished the final piece, two Hasslefree Miniatures figures that combine to make one character! So here they are:
The plan in any campaign is to slowly replace the zombies with Ghouls and Dire Wolves. I have the Dire Wolves - old Ral Partha wolves that I bought around 20 years ago (!!) - and the Ghouls will be the disturbingly excellent Paul Mueller ones from Heresy Miniatures.
I don't know when I'll get to play with them but I'm happy to have them finished some 15 years or so after I first started them.

Painting Points:
Today: 2
This Week: 6
2019 Total: 9

These two mostly just needed their purple areas repainting from the old Liche Purple to the new Xereus Purple that I bought recently, and their shields doing. I actually started these years ago; sometime around 2013 or 14 I think.

The main annoyance I have with Warhammer Cavalry is trying to rank the buggers up; they insist on making big flowy tails that get in the way of the nose of the horse behind. I have however managed to get this unit to rank up; I just need to try and remember how they fit together.

Next up; Silver Helm musician and the first basic Silver Helm.
And tonight I made some progress! Well, actually, I made a start. This is the Battle Standard Bearer, a Hero-level character in this 2,000 point army built for 6th Edition. The whole army consists of:

Lord on Barded Elven Steed in Dragon Armour

Hero with Battle Standard
Level 2 Mage on foot
Level 2 Mage on foot

20 High Elf Spear-elves (full command)
14 High Elf Archers (full command)
14 High Elf Archers (full command)
9 Silver Helm Heavy Cavalry (full command)

Tiranoc Chariot
Tiranoc Chariot

Repeater Bolt Thrower
Repeater Bolt Thrower

There is also a High Elf Lord on Griffon from the Blood Island starter set that GW did a few years ago left over from a brief idea to expand the army beyond 2,000 points with some Lothern Seaguard, Swordmasters of Hoeth and a couple of units of Ellyrian Reavers. But the wisdom of Nigel Stillman bathed me in the light of Middlehammer and I decided against it (though I liked the model of the Lord on Griffon so much I kept it, and will paint it last as a present to myself).

What does the army look like? Well:

Well, it's been a long time since I posted, and today seemed like an auspicious day of sorts. 72 years since VE Day, and one month 'til the General Election. Don't vote Tory, whoever you vote for; they've spent seven years shafting this country badly, and if they get back in worse - much worse - is to come, not least of which will be the end of the NHS.

Anyway.

I've been pretty busy, both generally and in the wargaming/hobbying side of things. More on that later. For now, I'm back and hoping to blog about once or twice a week for the foreseeable future. Good intentions and all that, though...!

Well, I won. Just. I achieved my Primary and Tertiary Objectives (12VP) and S achieved his Secondary and Tertiary Objectives (9VP). However, the slaughter was exceptionally great, and I think my losses were so catastrophic as to basically redefine the concept of a Pyrrhic Victory. I shall let the photos tell the story:

My extreme left flank, held by a platoon of renegade militia and home to what I naively thought would be a 'fast strike force' of daemons, a daemon prince, and some Chaos Marine bikers.

My centre-left flank; heavy hitting war machines, a throwaway unit of beastmen, and some angry close combat troops. Plus my Chaos Space Marine reserve.

The Fortress of Chaos; home to Abbadon, his Terminator Chosen bodyguard, my Chaos Lord and his Terminator Chosen bodyguard, with extra protection from 8 Plague Marines and a fearsome mob of Bezerkers. There was a Strategic Asset that gave every Chaos Space Marine (and Chaos Daemon) unit within 12" of the building a +1 to their INV save, which was quite nice, so I took that. (Chaos Altar).

Centre-right flank; Daemons galore! Note the Rhinos ready to be used as 'gates' to close off the streets after the tide of daemons and cultists pour through.

Extreme right flank; a mix of Slaanesh-identifying Marines, some daemonettes, and a shedload of cultists, plus a Leman Russ. You can see the Rhino-doors better here.

The Arch-Fiend Himself, S, deploying his reinforced company of Angels Sanguine (Blood Angels). Each squad is named after a ship present at Jutland, and the characters are all named after Royal Navy officers from the battle. So 'Dante' is Jellicoe, etc.
The Reserve. Oh good gods these bloody Jump Troops... about 70 figures, not to mention the normal chaps embarked in various APC/AIFVs!
Start of Turn 2 - The Jump Troops Arrive. All at once. Thanks to a re-rollable 3+ reserve roll (courtesy of the Damocles command rhino).
So I did have some war engines. They all died. Eventually. The Blood Slaughterers at least managed to destroy a Predator before being blown up, and the walking death robot thing just beyond the destroyed Defiler killed a couple of Marines before dying to Dreadnought and multi-melta fire.
End of my Turn Two I believe. See those cultists and Noise Marines and Plaguebearers? Most of them will die next turn thanks to orbit-to-surface weaponry.

The Death Company Dreadnought had in the Marine Turn Two Assault Phase spectacularly failed to kill any cultists at all in close combat after charging them, forcing the Terminators of Squad Colossus to get stuck in. My sorceror killed two of them with a sorcerous beam power slightly later (and he survived the game, possibly MVP for me).

The valiant renegade militia command unit, which was the only unit on my left flank to inflict any casualties on the Jump Troop Company after it landed - two to meltas, one to the officer's plasma pistol, and one to a laspistol shot, plus one in close combat. Platoon strength: 50. Casualties caused: 5. Casualties taken: 50. Hey, that's about right! Space Marines are meant to be worth ten ordinary men, after all!

My right flank at the start of my Turn 3 Assault Phase. The Daemonettes turned out to be useless in close combat (what happened to their rending claws!?) and were all killed for no loss. Note lack of Cultists. They were peasants and worthless anyway! What I mean is, I chose the Turn 3 Shooting Phase to use several Orbital Bombardment Strategic Assets. I dropped three (three!) orbital strikes on the Death Company, killing all bar five (including 'Lemartes' and 'Astorath')... and also my Bloodcrusher Juggernaught cavalry, who died in a scatter. Oh, and then the Marines got an orbital strike which (of course) hit perfectly and obliterated lots and lots of stuff from this bit of my army. Bye bye Noise Marines, for example...
...and the 'Counter-Attack' - the Chosen were shot to death and butchered before doing anything, the Bezerkers hacked down without being able to respond, and the Chaos Marines on the walkway at least managed to last two rounds of combat and kill a Space Marine.

Pictures pictures pictures words words words. End result, I won, it was a bloody slaughter, I came off much worse than the Angels Sanguine, having at the end about 6 or 7 units and a handful of characters still alive. Other interesting moments included:

The Vindicare Assassin that missed two of four shots and only inflicted one wound,
Both my Defilers and a Blood Slaughterer being immobilised in Turn One before they'd even moved,
Abbadon hiding for the entire game (mwahahahaha),
Chaos Havocs failing to damage anything at all all game (12 shots over the course of the game - they either missed or failed to glance their targets),
the usual healthy interest from children younger than most of S's models,
and my personal favourite;
Chaos Sorceror stands 1" away from a Land Raider and rolls 13 on 8+2d6 for armour penetration.13!! ARRRGH! On the last turn of the game as well! Bah humbug. Oh well.
First of all, I finished that conversion. She looks really rather badass if you ask me, what with her Voodoo-inspired facepaint and her hazard-striped improvised shoulder armour. I see her as being a mentor to the younger members of the HellBitches, looking after them and trying to make sure they don't get slotted too early. Painting see-through clothing is haarrrrrd.
And then a couple of days ago I thought "sod it, my Space Marine vehicles have been sat in the cupboard unloved for too long", dragged them out, and here's the result. The first one to get finished was the Razorback transport for my Techmarine and his servitors. Now as far as I can remember, the last edition in which they were 'officially' allowed to ride around in one of these was the 4th Edition Codex. But happily that's my favoured edition, so woo!
And then I finished off the Whirlwind which I started working on... oooh... two years ago? Looks pretty nifty actually, although this probably isn't the best angle (but it is the business end of it).
And this is what's on my workbench. Rhino transports galore (oh, and Iron Warrior Khorne Bezerkers, and Tzeentchian cultists, and some - out of shot - Molgravians for my Molgravian project)! I do have a fourth one, but I got it (and all these other vehicles) second hand, and it had, er, rather a lot of battle damage. So if anyone happens to have any Rhino mk1 exhausts spare (two would do, four would be PERFECT), ideally with their curvy exhaust pipes intact... let me know. Please? Otherwise I'm going to have to source a whole new Rhino mk1!

Speaking of new vehicles, all that remains for my Righteous Fists to be complete are:

A Vindicator mk 1 with bulldozer blade.
A Land Speeder Storm for my second scout squad.
A standard Dreadnought to accompany my Venerable and Ironclad dreads.
A Land Raider mk2B from Forgeworld for my Terminators to ride in.
A squad of Scout Bikers, because they're cool, OK?
A squad of five Sternguard with a Razorback mk1 (with twin-linked lascannon ideally) to accompany my Librarian.

The list has grown a wee bit but there we are. And finally, a figure from the Rogue Trader days. I estimate this thing at about 28 years old; I think it was released in about 1987? Painted up to lead my next squad of Iron Warriors. The Workerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03548315123275465797noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1642569857249421707.post-85275543812900459122016-02-02T17:02:00.000-08:002016-02-02T17:02:13.065-08:00The Last Escher... and more Iron WarriorsWell, I've really caught the Necromunda bug again. I've finally finished painting all the Escher figures I own (well, apart from the half-finished conversion of a Heavy with Grenade Launcher, but I need something like a dremel rotary tool to cut away some irritating metal parts before I can really think about finishing it), and have the last of my Goliaths on the painting table as I type.

In addition to that, I've finished (for the moment) all bar one of my Iron Warriors, giving me a pretty sizable army really. So I'm quite pleased with that. Anyway - pictures!
As-yet-unnamed models. The one on the left is probably going to be a Leader; in which case I may well call her Kat Wylde. The one on the right will end up being a promoted Juve, I expect.
Iron Warriors! These fellows bulk up the Techmarine's squad to its maximum size of 10 figures, giving me a squad dedicated to Slaanesh and another dedicated to Chaos Undivided. In the long run there'll be two more, one dedicated to Khorne (with flamers) and another dedicated to Nurgle (with meltas). Painting gold trim is tedious, but once it's done they are very quick to finish. The eagle-eyed among you may notice that none of them have the hazard striping that most Iron Warrior armies sport. This is because I think it looks silly and it is ridiculously hard to paint properly. The Workerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03548315123275465797noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1642569857249421707.post-83788637181221471102016-01-31T08:29:00.000-08:002016-01-31T08:29:00.857-08:00Ash Waste Nomads and More Iron Warriors

The West Wall Raiders! This is one of every Ash Waste Nomad released by Games Workshop; ideally I'd like another complete set so I can have a few more weapon options for campaign play, but I'm not complaining. Just wishlisting.
Blood for the Blood God! In the absence of Tamiya Clear Red, I extemporised with Dark Flesh, Khorne Red, Blood Red, and Flesh Wash, with a lot of stippling, and then a little bit of gloss varnish to make some areas look wet and sticky. This pleasant fellow will lead the Iron Warrior Bezerkers that I'm going to (eventually) get. More tea, vicar?
And the last three members of Anvil Squad; bringing them up to 10 Iron Warriors armed with boltguns and two plasma guns. I really like the way the mutant's head turned out, purple and pink are a good combination for Slaaneshi types.
Whatever happened to that retrospective? I dunno; I got painting or something. Next up are a mix of more Iron Warriors and more Necromunda stuff probably.
The Workerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03548315123275465797noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1642569857249421707.post-1086715143952783052016-01-28T18:15:00.000-08:002016-01-28T18:15:10.783-08:00Return to the UnderhiveOK, so I've been a busy chap since I finished those Black Templars. I went rummaging for Stuff To Paint (no shortage of figures in this flat) and happened to open my Necromunda drawer.

Aha, thought I, here's a project I can pick up!

So I mass-undercoated all my bare metal Ratskins, Orlocks, Escher, Goliaths, Scum, and so on and so forth, and am going to steadily work my way through them.

To start with, I've been focussing on the Ash Waste Nomad gang I bought for an absolute song some time ago now (in fact I think I picked them up around about the same time I moved into this flat, which is nearly four years ago now).

L-R: Nomad Leader, ganger with autorifle, ganger with double-bladed knife and autopistol.

L-R: Juve, ganger with long rifle, heavy, ganger with club and autopistol, heavy.

Just three more to finish. These chaps have been nice and quick because I'd bought them essentially painted, so really all I've done is rebase them and touch them up, with a little bit of repainting here and a bit of polish there to bring them up to my standard.

Oh, and I've been working on a few other odds and ends too, like this fellow:

He is the Apothecary of the 6th Cohort, 12th Grand Company, Legio IV Iron Warriors. Otherwise known as my Iron Warriors army. Anyway, he worships Grandfather Nurgle, the god of disease and decay and entropy. Rather apt, for a medic, I thought. If all else fails, pray to the god of disease that your injury doesn't go gangrenous and drop off.
As with all armies, they're never really finished. At least, not until you have at least one of every option available to you in the army book. That's my argument and I'm sticking to it.

Anyway, here you go:
Assault Squad Lachlan, with Reclusiarch von Stahl. 11 frothing 8' tall superhuman religious maniacs, hopped up on zeal and belief and armed with automatic RPG pistols and monomolecular teethed chainsaw-swords, propelled by nuclear fusion powered jump packs and wearing powered armour suits that will stop pretty much anything short of an anti-tank weapon. Oh, and don't forget the napalm-throwers. Two of those. Just in case, you know, they meet anyone they think is a heretic.

Protip: that's pretty much everyone. You heretics.
I've been painting Black Templars! Well, actually, Neophytes. This batch of figures were made in the late 1990s during the end of 2nd Edition 40K and were, originally, intended for my Righteous Fists army. But let's be honest, they make better Black Templars. Certainly easier to paint, anyway...

This fellow with the very big sword is known as the Emperor's Champion, and his role is to find the biggest, hardest, nastiest enemy and try and kill it. Sure, he's probably going to die, but the blood of martyrs is the seed of the Imperium. The Workerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03548315123275465797noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1642569857249421707.post-34020660468478427102016-01-18T15:28:00.000-08:002016-01-18T15:28:56.195-08:00An Open Mind Is Like A Fortress With Its Gates UnbarredWith that charmingly cheerful title out the way (it's all these Black Templars that I've been painting, I tells you!) I have come to share a blog post that is full of Extremely Useful Information, from a fascinating and particularly joyous blog, the Realm of Chaos 80s by Orlygg.

I have lots of Space Marines to paint strip. My preferred strip medium, Fairy Power Spray, was watered down and rendered useless last year, so I turned to the internet, and now, thanks to Orlygg, I know that what I need is DETTOL. Specifically, antiseptic brown Dettol.

I'll ask my artist partner Sarah to get me some next time she's in town.

Now, it's back to the painting table - I want to see if I can get the Emperor's Champion finished today. Imperator Dei Vult!

PS: The Imperium's Thought For The Day is probably my very favourite thing about the 40K universe. The Workerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03548315123275465797noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1642569857249421707.post-5476865292835345092016-01-17T17:15:00.005-08:002016-01-17T17:15:50.201-08:00Black Templars - ATTACK!Well, I was going to post some Tau, but then I spent the day painting Black Templars, so instead...
Initiates, Crusader Squad Barabas, Amalthean Crusade, Black Templars Chapter. Maltese Crosses are an absolute pain to freehand. Also of note is that the senior Initiate has parts in him from 1st edition (RTB01 powerfist), 2nd Edition (Cypher's left arm and a Valhallan bolt pistol), 3rd Edition (body and upper right arm), 4/5th Edition (legs, right shoulder pad, and head) and 6/7th Edition (back banner).

Next up is the Emperor's Champion and some more Initiates. I then need to paintstrip 9 Assault Marines and and 10 metal Scouts. Anyone got any advice for a replacement chemical instead of Fairy Power Spray? I hear good things about Dettol, but I don't know what type of Dettol...

Also, if anyone fancies giving away a NiB Land Raider Crusader, do please let me know.
