Pew Pew And Other Gun Noises

Today's been a quite productive one on the old painting front, honestly. I managed to finish off the Carrion, and although they aren't going to win any awards for quality they fit the aesthetic of the Tomb Kings army I've got and look absolutely fine from arm's length (which is what matters). On top of that I bashed out the Copplestone mini I'm using for a Death Cult Assassin which now gives me a full group of those. I still have to finish the tech-assassin, of course, but hey - two days from purchase to painted isn't bad for me at all. And I also blocked in some of the main colours on a group of minis I'm going to turn into a Frostgrave warband - one of the people at the club, K, suggested a game of Frostgrave in a couple of weeks' time, so we're both painting up some figures for that. I'm not totally sure what I'll use for the Wizard and Apprentice yet, but I'm sure I'll have some figures somewhere.

Carrion! Front view, showing all the gribbly exposed ribs and suchlike

Rear view, showing all the gribbly exposed tissues and quills and bones and suchlike

Twin pistols standing in for twin power weapons - I call it gun-fu

I tried to add a bit of blue to the trenchcoat to show it might be a slightly different black to that of the boots and corset; not sure how well it works but it's the thought that counts

A Frostgrave foursome - the three with the flatter bases are North Star Barbarian II plastics; the one on the far right is a metal miniature from an unknown manufacturer

A quick note on that mystery mini in the Frostgrave group. I'm going to use her as a thief, but I have no idea who made her - I picked her up along with some other loose metal minis from Black Lion Games in Edinburgh years ago. I think she might be a Ral Partha figure? If you know, please let me know in the comments! Bonus points if you can ID the inspiration for her paint scheme...

Plodding Along

Today I have done... not a lot. I updated the Wyld Kats, scribbled around with some ideas for my Skaven (I have about 2,000 points already which is pretty cool - just gotta paint them), and then did a chunk of the details on the Carrion and undercoated the Copplestone Selene mini:

The Carrion are nearly done, I think - I have to do the base details, and touch up some of the other details in the Carrion themselves. Should be easy enough to get done tomorrow. The Death Cult Assassin got an old-school brushed on undercoat and I reckon if I knuckle down she can be done in a couple of hours or less; the scheme is pretty simple - red, white, black.

The Flapping Of Tattered Wings Approaches

Although I wasn't painting for particularly long today I did manage to get the base coats down on the Carrion and slather them in Agrax Earthshade, which at least means that they should be reasonably easy to progress with now. I hope. These are not going to win any prizes but they will be done and that's the main thing. I'm sort of thinking about moving on to the Casket of Souls I have next, but that might be a bit more than I feel like taking on at the moment.

Anyway here's the obligatory picture:

The good thing is that there's not really any immediately visible white so "all" that's left is to do some highlights on the exposed muscle and bone/quills then do some details on the beaks and suchlike before sorting the bases. Should be the work of a day or two.

Assassins At Last

It took me a lot longer than I'd hoped, but the two 'classic' Death Cult Assassins are done. The sculpts are not the best ones GW has ever produced, and Finecast is not the right medium for them really - as I was painting them I kept finding flash in weird places that needed removing, and I don't think I'd've had that particular problem in metal. And I'd have been able to bend the blades into a proper shape, too. Yes, I know, I could have done the hot water trick but... I couldn't be bothered. I have successfully reduced the Pile of Opportunity by two, and that's the main thing really.

Front view, showing the small differences in the sculpts... and the *very* strange position of the left hand on the one on the right. You try waving a sword around like that!

They look much more similar from the back, but honestly it doesn't matter - I like the textural differences between the shiny bodysuits and the metal and parchment.

I also blocked out some of the colours on the tech-assassin, who I think I'll say is some kind of Mechanicus-based Death Cultist, and had a crack at putting some Black Templar Contrast on the Tomb Kings carrion I've got to do. For some reason despite contrast being very watery as befits what is in essence an ink, it just. did. not. flow across the mini. I think the white undercoat is a bit grittier than the contrast likes. Oh well.

Tech-assassin and three Carrion for the Tomb Kings in The Old World.

The Carrion should, in theory, be pretty easy to paint with just a few colours being needed - but, I suspect, they will be much more of a pain than I expect. We'll see!

I spent much of today thinking about Necromunda, and plotting where I might want to go with my gang as it grows. I have some options, but I think I'm going to be OK for figures in the short term - more Gangers and Juves are never a bad idea - but when the Juves in particular level up I have quite the shortage of special and heavy weapons, so I can forsee a purchase of the Weapons and Upgrade Sprue (and another box of Escher) coming up.

Tomorrow I hope to make more headway on the Tech-assassin and maybe even the Carrion, but I'm also going bird watching with my partner P and playing a game of Wolf Packs and Winter Snows in the evening, so I might not be able to get anything done painting wise.
